“Plant genome editing and precision breeding with CRISPR-Cas9”

The CRISPR-Cas9 system has been demonstrated as an efficient and versatile tool for targeted mutagenesis and precise genome editing in plants. Bioinformatic tools and new editing strategies have been developed to predict highly specific guide RNA spacers and to improve multiplex genome editing in model plants and economically important crops. With improved tools and methods, CRISPR-Cas9 has emerged as a powerful technology for plant genome engineering and precision breeding.

Dr. Yinong Yang is an associate professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at the Pennsylvania State University. He received a BS in biology from Hangzhou University, an MS in botany from University of South Florida, and a PhD in plant molecular and cellular biology from University of Florida. After a postdoctoral position in Waksman Institute at Rutgers University, he became an assistant and associate professor at the University of Arkansas. He joined the faculty at Penn State in 2006 and has been working on signal transduction of plant biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and genome engineering of agricultural crops.
