Research Interests:
A major objective of Dr. Hawk’s research with the University of Delaware corn breeding research program is to develop germ plasm sources (populations and elite parental lines) tolerant to drought and resistant to major pathogens and insect pests. Breeding sources include both elite corn belt dent and exotic germ plasm from the Germ plasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) project.
Dr. Hawk is also working to develop and evaluate inbred lines of corn with lower levels of phytic acid to reduce phosphorous levels in Delaware soils.
Another aspect of Dr. Hawk’s research in the corn breeding program is to collaborate with molecular biologists and a plant physiologist on projects to investigate the genetic control of high oil in maize and to determine mechanisms of resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses
