Research Overview:

Dr. Kirchman’s research interests include microbial ecology of heterotrophic bacteria in aquatic environments (mainly estuaries and oceans), bacterial degradation of macromolecules and other organic compounds, inorganic nutrient cycling of heterotrophic bacteria, phylogenetic structure of bacterial assemblages as revealed by molecular techniques, and the impact of organic pollutants on bacterial community structure. He has authored a book, “Microbial Ecology of the Oceans,” and written a number of articles that were published in professional journals, including Aquatic Microbial Ecology, Nature, Applied Environmental Microbiology, Microbiology and Deep Sea Research.
