Research Overview:

Dr. Liao’s current research interests are mainly in bioinformatics, developing algorithms and software to solve biological problems. His research experience includes computer simulation of molecular systems, genome sequencing (physical mapping and post-assembly sequence analysis), protein homology detection, clustering and classification, microarray data management and analysis, and genome comparisons. He is particularly interested in utilizing and developing machine learning and data mining techniques to address biological problems that are not yet solved adequately. The focus will be put on increasing the capacity of incorporating domain-specific knowledge, including the efforts to improve the effectiveness, expressiveness and interpretability of statistical learning methods.

Dr. Liao was an assistant professor of physics at Peking University from 1992 to 1995. His work in theoretical physics was on quantum groups and algebra and their applications to field theory and statistical physics. Prior to coming to UD, Dr. Liao was a senior research physicist at the Central Research and Development of E. I. du Pont de Nemours Company in Wilmington, Delaware.
