Research Overview:

Dr. Powers is an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Delaware and a faculty research fellow at DBI.  He also serves as Assistant Director of the Delaware Interdisciplinary Ethics Program. His research concerns ethics and technology, with a focus on information ethics, values and design, genetic enhancement, and nanotechnology.

Dr. Powers received his undergraduate degree from William & Mary and his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin (1994).  He completed research on his dissertation while at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany, as a DAAD-Fulbright graduate fellow.  Most recently he spent three years at the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science as a National Science Foundation research fellow.  He has received other developmental funding from NSF and NEH, and has worked as an ethics consultant on a broad array of issues, including industrial refuse as an energy source in developing countries, and medical applications software.

Dr. Powers has taught courses on philosophy, and especially on ethics, at William & Mary, Central Michigan University, the University of Virginia, and the University of Delaware.  He also taught philosophy and computer engineering courses while on the faculty at Santa Clara University.
