Facility Overview

The Glassblowing Shop is located in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Delaware, Newark, DE. The fully equipped unit fabricates, modifies, and repairs custom scientific apparatus and instruments for the university community. Work requested by outside companies will be considered on a case by case basis, as time allows. Consultation services are available on design, function and safety. A technical and material library is maintained to assist in locating needed information, products and parts.

• Glassware / apparatus lehr annealing
• Ashing of unremovable residues (restrictions may apply)
• Cork/stopper boring
• Cutting, grinding and drilling of glass and related materials
• Encapsulation / evacuation of samples
• Glass bead etching
• Glass compatibility testing
• Grinding of flanges
• Limited on-site glassblowing services
• Micro-electrodes (gold, platinum, silver, tungsten)
• Mercury removal and recovery from glassware/ instruments
• Non-contaminated glassware salvage and disposal
• Pyrex to tungsten electrical connections (uranium intermediate glass)
• Removal of stuck or frozen joints, flanges and stopcocks
• Sample recovery from damaged apparatus
• Strained or damaged glassware evaluation
• Standard taper joint touch up lapping
• Tesla coil vacuum leak testing and repair
• Ultrasonic cleaning of small glass and ceramic parts
• UV (or standard) epoxy work
• Other services may be added as per demand
