What is NECC?
NECC is a regional initiative to improve access to upgraded networking capabilities among the Northeast Regional IDeA and EPSCoR States Delaware, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Funding for the NECC initiative is provided by NIH-NCRR through INBRE Supplements and by NSF-EPSCoR through the Track-2 program.
Leadership
The NECC Executive Steering Committee, comprised of Judy Van Houten (VT), Kelvin Chu (VT), Robert Dalton (NH), Scott Valcourt (NH), Michael Eckart (ME), Vicki Nemeth (ME), Jeffrey Seeman (RI), Edward Hawrot (RI) and Karl Steiner (DE) provides leadership to the initiative and is meeting regularly via videoconference.
Goals
- Improve regional internet connectivity to nationwide networks
- Provide training & education for scientists and educators
- Strengthen inter-institutional partnerships
- Facilitate biomedical research collaborations
- Enable access to distributed research resources
- Support NIHINBRE, NIHCOBRE and NSFEPSCoR Networks
Progress
- NECC Executive Team with representatives from each state has been formed.
- The 17-member NECC Task Force is meeting regularly via teleconference.
- A NECC White Paper was authored in June 2007.
- Network diagrams for all participating States have been generated - Spring 2008
- Development of initial and future applications in planning stage - Spring 2008
- Needs analysis for each State is completed - Fall 2008.
- First NECC Workshop held on August 17 at Northeast Regional IDeA Meeting in Burlington, VT.
- NECC Proposal submitted to NSF under the EPSCoR Track-2 initiative January 2009
- NECC Proposals submitted to NIH under the ARRA Administrative Supplements May 2009
- $6 Million NECC Proposal funded by NSF-EPSCoR August 2009
- $8 Million for NECC Proposals funded by NIH-NCRR August 2009
