Research Overview:

Dr. Bauer received his B.S. in biology from Dickinson College in 1988 with minor degrees in chemistry and religion. He completed his medical training in 1992 receiving his MD from Jefferson Medical College. He furthered his training in both general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Jefferson Medical College. During this time he spent an additional two years conducting research in obesity, ischemic myocardium, and heparin induced thrombocytopenia.

Dr. Bauer was recruited to join the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center as a Thoracic Surgeon in 2002. Since that time he has initiated and leads several programs designed to further the understanding of thoracic malignancies. He is the local principle investigator of The Early Lung Cancer Action Program (lung cancer screening), ECOG 1201 trial (trimodality treatment of esophageal cancer) and Aerodigestive Tract Stenting Program.

Dr. Bauer is currently participating in joint research interests with The Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Delaware Biotechnology Institute in 1) advanced thoracic imaging technologies, 2) epidemiology of lung cancer and lung cancer screening within the state of Delaware and 3) translational research projects on esophageal and lung cancer.
