Economic Development

The Delaware Biotechnology Institute works to grow and expand the Delaware economy. We do this through a variety of key initiatives that foster discovery and development of innovative bioscience technologies; support the establishment and support of start-up and small business; and engages with medium and large bio-based companies. Our efforts include the Bioscience Center for Advanced Technology that provides Delaware companies with cost-effective access to specialized high-end research instruments and supports research projects that link academic and industrial scientists in Delaware. We also work closely with the Delaware Bioscience Association to cultivate an bioscience economic ecosystem that support biotechnology businesses in the state. As part of these efforts, we facilitate the Biobreakfast series, the Life Science Professionals series, career fairs, and other networking and professional development programs. We work closely with partners to explore and develop business opportunities that link Delaware’s bioscience community to cities and countries around the world.

DBI is a product of growth and support of life sciences in Delaware. Our Institute was founded with support from the University of Delaware, the Delaware General Assembly, the DuPont Company, AstraZeneca Plc., and Hercules Inc. (now Ashland). Our institute, dedicated in 2001, is located in the Delaware Technology Park (DTP) that has housed more than 75 life science, IT, and related companies. DTP is a nationally recognized economic development park that has created more than 16,000 jobs in our community.
